Job Purpose


To carry out a wide range of Streetscene activities including street cleansing & grounds maintenance as scheduled by the Streetscene Coordinator, Streetscene Officer and Chargehand.



Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities


-Picking up litter and assisting with the collection and disposal of items “fly-tipped”

-Emptying and cleansing of litter and dog bins

-General grounds maintenance to include, grass cutting, hedge trimming, removal of weeds, clearing leaves and blossom in housing estates, public parks, playing fields, landscaped areas and similar open spaces.

-Monitor and ensure that all play areas are clean and safe to use.

-Maintenance of shrub beds around shopping precincts, public buildings etc. and cutting back overgrowth to paths and other thoroughfares.

-Erection and dismantling of sports and other equipment eg. football/rugby goals

-Cleansing of public buildings such as changing rooms and toilets

-Manual sweeping where necessary.

-Patrol and attendance activities (for example collection and issuing of tickets)

-Maintenance of orderly conduct of the public (including Funerals, events etc)

-Assist with the manual winter maintenance service i.e. gritting of roads / pathways

-Work in a safe manner, with safe working practices ensuring that all protective clothing is worn as necessary or directed

-Understand the needs and requirements of all stakeholders and provide customer focused approach to the delivery of all services.

-Undertake appropriate training to ensure competency in relation to the tasks undertaken.

-Horticultural operations including planting, pruning and seeding of public parks, playing fields, landscaped areas and similar open spaces.

-Ground maintenance including basic setting out, marking of sports areas and upkeep of artificial/synthetic pitches and chemical control under direction.

-Use and maintenance of powered hand tools and light plant, for example strimmers, blowers, hedgecutters and pedestrian mowers.

-Assist with “catch-up” refuse and recycling duties, including bin collection, collection of refuse sacks, recycling boxes and bulky special collections. 

-Operation and maintenance of pedestrian sweepers.

-Interpretation of plans, site preparation and construction, soft and hard landscaping, setting out pitches, tree care and propagation.  This will involve the ability to identify plants in the interpretation of plans.

-Undertaken an assessment to spray chemicals (PA1 + PA6 Knapsack)

-Removal of graffiti ensuring that COSHH assessments and control measures are available when using hazardous chemicals on graffiti and other similar work.

-Ensure that all health and safety risks are controlled during the removal of dead animals and other hazardous waste.

-Ensure that traffic management is organised whilst responding to road traffic collisions cleansing duties.

-Operation and routine maintenance/checks of large plant machinery for example Scarab/Johnson sweepers or similar mechanical sweepers.  This will also require a HGV licence and any other necessary training (driving licence holders only).  

-Operation and routine maintenance/checks of major plant machinery including Refuse Vehicles and Gritting Vehicles (driving licence holders only).

-Operation and routine maintenance/checks of Tractors to carry out mowing, hedge cutting, harrowing, spiking etc. (driving licence holders only).

-The Operation and general maintenance of ride on mowers having undertaken the necessary LANTRA training (driving licence holders only)

-Operation and general maintenance of plant machinery including mechanical driven sweepers, mini ploughs and loading shovels (driving licence holders only)

-Undertake a driving assessment for the safe and proper use of a TCBC vehicle (driving licence holders only)

-Undertake any other duty which may reasonably be requested by the relevant Chief officer.
